How long should it take to form an opinion and stance on short videos ?
No matter what incidents happen nowadays, someone always seems to have a mobile phone keeping an eye on the situation. Filming 5 minutes or so of situations and incidents. These videos suddenly find themselves on social networks, gaining attention on news sites and news reports. Its amazing how emotional the viewers of these videos become, a couple of minutes, even seconds ! and viewers now decide stances, opinions and stereotypes against whole sections of society. But at what point should we believe, and then alter opinions after viewing short videos?
Should we be completely swayed after seeing someone punch another on a short two minute video. Or should we here the story from both sides, seeking more information ? The current social media buzz means that people log in for limited times in the day, wanting to access quick information, make a stance and log off. But is this not completely detrimental ? Forming opinions in seconds. This can't be a correct way to determine personal stances. Otherwise court hearings would take place in 5 minutes, and only require one side of the disagreement to turn up.
Just think what a 2 minute video could be perceived to show, and the actual situation that happened.......
'A teenager shouting at another teenager in school' - The person shouting may of been bullied for weeks beforehand (off camera). 'That road rage video where a cyclist argues with a driver of a car' - The driver made a reckless decision that almost knocked the cyclist off, quite likely resulting in the cyclist ending up under the car wheels. 'That protester that is being harassed by a police officer' - Has been purposely annoying that officer for hours beforehand, sticking a camera in their face and has groups of people off camera being aggressive and offensive. 'The person bitten by a police dog' - Just ran at the dog shouting, being aggressive towards the dogs best friend (the handler) and then tried kicking the dog.
Should we really keep believing short videos, showing apparently completely one sided disagreements (where the person recording always seems to be the innocent). NO ! I would categorically say that after sending someone out with a camera for an hour, they could easily capture an apparent completely random act of violence or brutality. The question is, what happened before, during and after, off camera or infact edited out.
No thanks, i'll stick to believing what i see with my own eyes.
